Being prepared out in the field is an important aspect of wildlife education. Here is a list of things we feel the kids should bring along, as well as a list of items that may enhance our students experience:
- Proper clothing
- This means long sleeve shirts and pants throughout the year. Shorts and tee-shirts, while nice on the warmer days, leave your skin exposed to insect bites, scrapes, poison ivy and the sun. Make sure you wear something you won't mind getting dirty.
- Hats can help keep the bugs and rain away and also shade your eyes from the sun. I never head out into the woods without one.
- Proper footwear, such as boots, hiking shoes and old sneakers are a must. No high heels or brand new shoes here! While flip flops will work, we encourage our students to wear closed toe shoes.
- When taking part in our winter programs, clothing is EXTREMELY important. Make sure your kids have warm socks, boots, hats, gloves and a warm coat, even on the warmer days. Any survival expert will tell you, it's best to be prepared for the worst of weather.
- Back Packs
- These are very useful when out in the woods. While we don't require the kids to bring one along, we strongly encourage it. Some of our students have a separate pack just for Coyote Club filled with useful items such as rain gear, extra socks, water bottles, etc...
- Water Bottles
- Pens, Pencils, Etc...
- Journals
- Keeping a nature journal is one of the best ways to learn about the world around you. Make sure they're easy to tote around.
- Bug Spray/Sun Protection
- We always carry these in our packs, but if you prefer certain brands or strengths, bring them along.
- Extras
- If you've got binoculars, hand lenses, compasses, nets and field guides bring them along. Anything you think would help you learn about wildlife. NO KNIVES PLEASE!
